The Toastmaster Test
One of the pre-requisites for being a Radio Broadcaster, good or bad, is being able to think on your feet and “keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you”, as Rudyard Kipling once said. But thinking on your feet and live speech is not restricted only to broadcasters. There are many people who need to talk for a living and for entertainment purposes. So our ears pricked up when an e-mail arrived in to the Mooney inbox telling us about a Mairead Murphy. We decided we just HAD to invite her in because we were told that she can talk ON ANY TOPIC for 90 seconds. ANY TOPIC!!! She honed her skills through Toastmasters and this weekend she is the only Irishwoman competing in the UK and Ireland Table Topics final in Cork. So Mairead is here, along with Toastmaster judge Ciaran Moore, and we’re going to help her practice for the final by testing her out on a few topics.
